Wings Unharmed: Global Approaches to Mitigating Wildlife Collisions - Part 1 [Webinar]

Monday, June 22, 1:00 pm ET

The Technology Catalog webinar series continues with a new topic: Wings Unharmed: Global Approaches to Mitigating Wildlife Collisions. This topic features risk minimization technologies from the REWI Technology Catalog that have undergone effectiveness evaluations during the technology’s development. Technologies presented are within a technology readiness level of 6-9 or those that have been made commercially available in the United States or globally.

This webinar introduces participants to scientists, researchers, developers, and manufacturers developing technologies to reduce wind energy risks to birds and bats, with a focus on real time monitoring through automated detection and acoustic sensing to mitigate risk. This webinar presents two current technologies in the REWI Technology Catalog: Turbine Integrated Mortality Reduction (TIMR) and ThruTracker and follows up with a Q&A on the use of these technologies in renewable energy developments both in the United States and globally to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Moderator: La’ Portia J. Perkins, Project Manager, REWI

About the Speakers

Dr. Aaron Corcoran is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, where he leads the Sensory and Movement Ecology Lab. For more than 20 years, he has used advanced technologies to study bats and animal movement, with research spanning bat behavior, predator-prey interactions, and wildlife activity around wind turbines. He is also the founder of ThruTracker Analytics, a startup established to make high-precision video tracking and behavioral analysis accessible to wildlife researchers around the world. Through his academic research and his work with ThruTracker, he has helped advance bat videography and video-based wildlife monitoring as increasingly important tools in research and conservation.

Dr. Eran Amichai is a Senior Principal Scientist at Normandeau Associates, Inc., and is their senior bat biologist. He is an expert in bat biology and conservation, bioacoustics, field study design, and animal behavior. Before leaving academia for consulting, his research focused on bioacoustics and other sensory biology tools to understand animal behavior and movement ecology. In addition to research, Dr. Amichai has more than 15 years of national-scale bat conservation experience in Israel, including monitoring and policy advising and planning for conservation and wind-energy mitigation.  Currently, Eran is managing a utility-scale commercial smart curtailment project at a large wind farm in the Midwest and overseeing the design and implementation of bat and bird acoustic monitoring for the US’s largest offshore wind farm. His extensive skill set includes studying bats in the offshore wind energy environment using acoustics, thermal imagery, and visual identification.
