AWWIC Bat Technical Report - 3rd Edition (2026)

Hatchet Ridge, Pattern Energy

This third edition of the AWWIC bat technical report provides an up-to-date snapshot of species composition, timing, and magnitude of bat collisions with land-based wind energy turbines. 57 new studies to inform data summaries have been added since the 2nd edition in 2020. Findings are useful in checking assumptions and setting expectations about collision risks at wind energy facilities, as well as generating testable hypotheses and assessing monitoring designs.

Special Update: Focal species fatalities by state

As the AWWIC database has expanded, and with a growing number of bat species that have or are being considered for federal or state listing, there is value in species-level fatality information for individual U.S. states. For states with bat fatality estimates from at least five projects (N=18 states), we provide for the first time in this 3rd edition state-level fatality estimate statistics (mean and variability among studies [coefficient of variation]) for five focal species of bats: the three widespread species most frequently found as carcasses during PCMM searches (hoary bat, eastern red bat, and silver-haired bat) plus two species under consideration for ESA status and with sufficient fatality data for analyses (little brown myotis [status under review] and tricolored bat [proposed for federal listing]).

Please refer to the full report for more details and guidelines on how to use these statistics. An interactive version of these maps is available below.
